Over the last year SoundNetwork have been picking up on the upsurge of indie DIY tech and making, almost an arts and crafts movement itself, through MAKE, Instructables and the ever popular Arduino programming platform that's becoming increasingly embedded in the production of tech based art, interaction and music. We have responded to the cooperative's intent with an open and part curated artist's hackspace, to reveal this surge of creative tech in the city and the region. Taking the hackspace term literally, artists will be hacking into the old rapid paintshop space and installation leftovers with Arduinos, microphones, computers, charity shop tat, lights and good old MDF. Its an opening up of how people are producing art; the actual wor' is the people still building it throughout the week, so come down and see how its going or add to it! Classic electroacoustic sound art takes an acousmatic approach to its synthesis; 'hiding' its production and process behind a veil of multi channel sound and 'secret' tech and knob twiddling wizadry. Here there is no veil and indeed no artwork; but a mass of prototyping; more a chance to see and meet artists and how they are producing things. A slightly sprawling installation will be built up with artists in residence for 1 or 2 days dropping in or hanging around leading up to a fantastic Howduino weekend. Howduino are a local and national group of Arduino makers and artists organised by MCQN.net Finally look out for our Binary Jam gig for the long night on Thursday night featuring Mark Pilkington, Spirit Animals and guests!
